Happy Monday traveler!

We are back in Croatia this week. There are so many beautiful seaside spots in this country.

Split is the second largest city in there and the best for experiencing the culture. It was founded somewhere around the second or third century BC by the Greeks. Roman rule eventually took over and to this day, the emperor Diocletian’s Palace still stands and it’s a lively place - a retirement community, actually. There is plenty to see and do there for all though.

There was a Byzantine period before the Kingdom of Venice took over. As the Modern Period continued, Napoleon and the Kingdom of Italy had it’s time, before Split was under Austrian rule. German rule granted it to Independent State of Croatia, then it became part of Yugoslavia, and finally, Croatia gained its independence in 1991.

After all of that, there is a rich and diverse history that attracts people from around the world throughout the year. We were inspired by the modern use of all the historical buildings. It felt like people really respected how today’s Split came to be.

🙌🏼This Week’s Inspiration

Split combines ancient history, lively waterfront views, incredible food, and easy access to some of Croatia’s most beautiful islands and coastal towns.

Begin your visit in the heart of Split at Diocletian’s Palace. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is not simply a place you visit. It is part of the living, breathing center of the city!

Wander through narrow stone streets, explore hidden courtyards and ancient passageways, and stop at one of the many cafés tucked between historic buildings. Split’s Old Town and Diocletian’s Palace are the perfect example of how history and everyday life can exist side by side.

Part of Diocletian’s Palace

After exploring the palace, take a walk along the Riva, Split’s lively waterfront promenade. Grab a seat at a café, watch the boats come and go, and enjoy the relaxed Mediterranean atmosphere. For sweeping views of the city and sea, head up Marjan Hill, or spend an afternoon relaxing at one of Split’s beaches.

💙 Take a Day Trip to the Blue Lagoon

One of the most memorable adventures from the Split area is a trip to the Blue Lagoon.

Located near the islands of Drvenik Veli, the lagoon is known for its beautiful turquoise water and is a popular place for swimming, snorkeling, and simply enjoying a day on the Adriatic Sea. Boat excursions are a fun way to experience the islands and see just how many shades of blue the water can be!

We’re still thinking about this water, weeks after we were there

A day on the water is one of the best ways to experience this part of Croatia. Split is a major starting point for boat trips to nearby islands, including Brač, Hvar, Šolta, and Vis, so you can easily add an island adventure to your itinerary.

We took a 5 hour speedboat tour, but could have easily spent the entire day on the water. Our guide took us to a beach bar on Barbara Beach and it was the perfect way to kickoff the day.

Tip: Spend as much time in that water as you can

🏰 Step Back in Time in Trogir

Just a short trip from Split, Trogir is another destination you will not want to miss.

This charming historic town is often called a living museum, and its beautifully preserved old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Wander through its narrow streets, admire the stone buildings, and visit the impressive Cathedral of St. Lawrence and Kamerlengo Fortress.

This was one of the stops on our speedboat tour. Trogir is small enough to explore at a relaxed pace, making it a perfect day trip. Take time to wander along the waterfront, enjoy a meal overlooking the boats, and get lost among the ancient streets.

How to Get to Split:

The easiest way to reach Split is by flying into Split Airport, which is located near both Split and Trogir. Depending on where you are traveling from, you may need to connect through another European city. Split can also be reached by car, bus, train, or ferry from other parts of Croatia and surrounding destinations.

If you are planning to visit Trogir, its close location to Split Airport makes it especially convenient to add to your trip.

The best way to explore Split’s historic center is on foot. The Old Town is wonderfully walkable, and some of the best discoveries happen when you wander down a street just to see where it leads.

For destinations farther away, local buses and taxis are available. You can also use ferries and organized boat trips to explore the islands. Trogir can be reached from Split by car or local bus, making it an easy addition to your itinerary. If you are planning several day trips beyond the city, renting a car may give you more flexibility.

🧳 What to Pack

Where to Stay:

Hotel Park - luxury hotel with breakfast included, three minute walk to the beach

Slavija Culture Heritage Hotel - buffet breakfast include, and optional massages on the beach

Radisson Blue Resort & Spa - luxury resort with full service spa

Tifani Luxury Rooms - right next to Diocletian’s Palace

What to Eat:

Come hungry because Dalmatian food is part of the experience! Try peka, a traditional dish in which meat or seafood and vegetables are slow-cooked under a bell-shaped lid. Fresh seafood is also a must, along with grilled fish, octopus, risotto, and local pasta dishes.

While in Trogir, keep an eye out for rafioli, delicate cookies filled with an aromatic almond filling. And wherever you are, give yourself permission to slow down over a meal. In Croatia, enjoying good food with a beautiful view is never time wasted!

What to Pack:

Comfortable walking shoes are a must because those beautiful stone streets are best explored on foot! Pack lightweight clothing for warm days, along with a swimsuit, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat for time by the sea.

A light jacket or sweater is helpful for cooler evenings and breezy boat rides. You also should have a small day bag for exploring, a reusable water bottle, and a portable phone charger for all the photos you are sure to take.

If the Blue Lagoon is on your itinerary, do not forget a towel and anything you might want for a day of swimming and snorkeling!
